This private club was my "home course" for many years. That being said I'll try to be non-biased as possible.
LG&CC is always in great condition during the spring and summer months. It's a relatively short track but offers some real challenges on both the front and back nines.
The front nine opens with an elevated tee box overlooking a wide, very slight dog-leg left fairway. Reachable in two, this short par 5 can set you up for a nice birdie to begin your round. The first challenge comes on hole 3. Again an elevated tee box sits at an angle to the this par 5 and requires an accurate tee shot to set up your second. The entire left side of the hole borders a highway and is OB. Long, straight tee shots can lead to finding the green in two with a deep, accurate second shot.
A true risk-reward awaits at the par 4 fifth. A dog-leg left can be cut with your drive to a tough-to-hold green. Errant shots left will leave you watching your ball sail into the reservoir, about 200 feet below (A local tradition is to tee one up and try to clear the reservoir, although this is probably frowned upon). Same goes for shots that go long - a steep drop off will leave you with an unplayable lie. A lay-up is recommended and can provide you with an easy par if the pin is not located in the front of the green. The false front has claimed many a short shot.
Moving to the back nine, you'll be challenged on the, as the locals say, "goat holes". Holes #14, 15, and 16 are situated on the side of the mountain with most balls landing and kicking down the mountain. Be careful on the 14th green, this big green can be deceiving as it's loaded with subtle breaks. The finishing 18th is your last chance to make up for poor play. This easy, short finishing hole is wide open except for a grove of trees on the right side of the fairway adjacent to the landing area. Hit into the trees and be prepared for some pin ball.
LG&CC offers meticulously pampered fairways and greens the likes you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere. A long-awaited and much needed new clubhouse opens in 2007 and is sure to impress. While I now live outside of Utah, I try to play this course whenever I'm back visiting. There's nothing like playing a course you have intimate knowledge of. If you can swindle a tee time with a member, I highly recommend this relatively easy, fun and comfortable course.
