Located in Bethpage State Park are five remarkable 18-hole golf courses called The Black Course, The Blue Course, The Green Course, The Yellow Course, and The Red Course. While each one of these courses is exceptional in its own right, The Black Course has received the attention, and it is easily considered one of the best courses in the nation. The Black Course is most famous for hosting the 2002 and the upcoming 2009 U.S. Open tournaments on the PGA Tour, but unlike other courses that host such grand tournaments, Bethpage Black is open to the public. For this reason, it can be very difficult to reserve a tee time, but the quality of golf that this course offers makes the waiting time well worth it. It is an extremely difficult test of golf, and it features gigantic bunkers, rolling hills, and very thick rough. The front nine consists of tree-lined fairways, while the back nine is more reminiscent of a Scottish links course. Golfers of Bethpage Black can expect a very long course from tee to green, and it is not uncommon for men to play from the ladies tees. On Golf Magazine's 2006-2007 list of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S., Bethpage Black ranked 7th. The Blue Course is also very difficult due to its rolling hills and its narrow, front nine layout. Golfers of this course can expect numerous encounters with uneven lies. The Green Course is known for its tiny greens, and it is considered, along with The Red Course, to be a decent challenge for intermediately skilled players. The Yellow Course is considered the easiest course of the bunch, and it is a fantastic course for beginners because the terrain is flat.
